USF Men's Soccer Knocks Off #1 Akron 2-1

Sure, it's only an exhibition, but this is still a big win for the Half Hoops. It was Akron's first regulation loss in two years, and I believe it's the first time since football beat Troy State in 2000 that any USF squad has beaten the #1 team in the country in their sport.

Bernando Ator scored both markers for the Bulls, in the 22nd and 76th minutes, and Jeff Altinello saved 10 of 11 Akron shots on goal. The Zips had the majority of the scoring chances (including a whopping 11-1 edge on corners), but USF's defense held up to close out the game.

Toro is working on a much longer story about the game, so check back later.

My Favorite First Day of Class Story

This actually happened in a Spring semester, but whatever.

I took a class called Introduction to Public Administration, back when I thought it might be interesting to work in the public sector. I show up to the classroom in SOC. The lecturer calls the roll, adds people to the class who want to take an empty seat, and starts her introduction.

It takes the lecturer about 15 or 20 minutes to get to the syllabus. She hands them all out and we're all reading them over for a couple minutes. Then suddenly this one guy near the front announces, "Oh, I'm in the wrong room!" He jumps up, grabs all his things, and leaves. So either he really was dumb enough to need 20 minutes to know he was in the wrong room (and this was a 3000-level class so God knows how he got to that point in college), or he suddenly decided this class was going to suck or that he would suck in it. Which doesn't explain his dramatic exit at all, but I couldn't think of any other reason why he did it.

(By the way, the textbook cover had a picture of some election board pinheads in Broward or Palm Beach County holding a ballot up to the light to figure out if a chad was dimpled or pregnant or whatever. This should have been a hint to give up on my idea of working in government.)

This link takes you to the Associated Press' fantastic new college football site, which includes their Top 25 poll. It includes news for any team receiving votes, plus it even links to the blogs of SB Nation for extra information. You can also easily search for a specific poll member's ballot for any given week. (Scott Carter of the Tampa Tribune is the only local media member with a vote.)

Alabama is #1, to the surprise of no one. Among this season's opponents, Florida is #4, Miami is #13, Pittsburgh is #15, and West Virginia is #25. Cincinnati is the first team in the "also receiving votes" category.

Speaking of which, USF received no votes. Really? Even SMU got a vote, and it wasn't from Craig James.

DeAndrew Rubin and Terrence Royal both play for the Tampa Bay Storm, while Richard Clebert and Huey Whittaker star for the Spokane Shock.

The ArenaBowl is live at 8:00 tonight on NFL Network. While we never root against former Bulls, I will be rooting just a little bit harder for Rubin and Royal.

Lake Region OL Thor Joswiak committed to the Bulls earlier this week. Yep, his real given first name is indeed Thor. This is a win-win for us. We pick up another big lineman, and we get to use Thor quotes for the next 5 years. If he can harness the powers of Mjöllnir sometime by his junior year we will be in good shape.

Practice Roundup: On The Eleventh Day, The Beat Writers Rested Edition

There was practice yesterday, but with Greg and Scott both taking the day off, there isn't a whole lot to work with in the linkage department. Phil Neary filed a report for the Tribune that's linked above - the main part of the story is Skip Holtz talking about the obvious need to get the Bulls' offense cranked up after its weak showing in Saturday's scrimmage. Holtz also sounds like he's leaning towards keeping Evan Landi at receiver unless absolutely necessary.

Two practices and a new depth chart on Monday. We'll review them both (all?) on Tuesday morning.

Team USF Holds Off Host Brazil 64-63

Details are still coming in, but Team USA held off the home country by a point in tonight's Pan American University Championships game. Auman reports that Brazil hit a buzzer-beater, but the shooter had a foot on the three-point line and they lost by one.

I guess they have neutral officials down there because that sounds like the kind of situation the phrase "home cooking" was designed for in basketball. I'll take it.

UPDATED: Jordan Heath's blog has some more information - the Bulls had to withstand a last-minute Brazil rally, and the would-be game-tying three actually went up on the scoreboard as a three until the on-court officials corrected it.

Coach Keifer and the guys are already doing very well for themselves in the preseason polls. The Men's Soccer team will be at home for an exibition match against Number 1 ranked Akron on the 28th. It seems like that would be a great way to spend your Saturday night.
