Well That Was Ugly
Think Its Best To Just Move On
And Forget This Game

And From Jamie:

I woke up for this?
I'm really questioning why
I woke up for this

Bulls have a great opportunity today. USF is on the edge of the bubble (seriously), and a win against a Top 50 RPI team would be great for the resume.

Game is on ESPNU, ESPN3.com, and on 620 WDAE.

See you guys at tip-off.

Go Bulls!

USF Basketball Mixology: Game 23, Georgetown

John Thompson after 10 of our selected beverages of the day (AP Photo/Winslow Townson)

In last week's installment, we learned that Rhode Island has an official state beverage. It turns out that Washington, D.C. has an official alcoholic beverage: the Rickey.

What's a Rickey? For a definition, and the story behind it, we turn to an unusual place: the Washington D.C. Municipal Regulations. ACR 19-97, "Rickey Recognition Resolution of 2011," reads in part as follows:

WHEREAS, the Rickey was invented in Washington, D.C. in the 1880's and contains gin, bourbon, or rye whiskey, half a lime squeezed and dropped into a highball [glass] or goblet, ice, and sparkling mineral water;

WHEREAS, George A. Williamson, a prominent member of the business community and bartender, named by the Washington Post in 1911 as the "King of Juleps," created the Rickey, which was subsequently named after lobbyist Col. Joe Rickey;

WHEREAS, the Rickey was created at a prominent District landmark; Shoomaker's, which was formerly located at 1331 E Street N.W. (now Pennsylvania Avenue)... a place known to have been frequented by the District's most famous denizens, including every U.S. President from 1858 to 1917, with the exception of non-drinker Rutherford B. Hayes;

WHEREAS, the Rickey has enjoyed worldwide fame, been printed in cocktail books past and present, and immortalized in media from the Martha Stewart Show to the Simpsons;

WHEREAS, during the warm District summers, the responsible consumption of Rickeys by those of legal drinking age is said to be "air conditioning in a glass";

The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the Rickey as the native cocktail of Washington, D.C. and declares the month of July as "Rickey Month" in the District of Columbia.

And that's pretty much the story: invented by business leaders, promoted by lobbyists, consumed by presidents, and given its own piece of legislation.

The Rickey is more of a summer drink than a winter one, due to its ability to make Washington's sweltering summers more bearable. But it's going to be 83 in Tampa today, so why not?

In recipe form (from TheBar.com):

--------------------

Gin Rickey

  • 1.25 oz. dry gin
  • .25 oz. lime juice
  • 1 oz. soda water

Add gin and lime juice. Serve over ice in highball glass. Top with soda water.

This Georgetown Game Feels Eerily Familar

I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty optimistic about tomorrow's game against Georgetown. I have no stats to back this up, but only for the fact that this game feels almost exactly like the 2010 game. This will probably end in complete and utter failure tomorrow morning, but just roll with it.

Georgetown is a nationally ranked team (#8 in 2010, #14 in 2012) that dominated a national power in their previous game (Duke in 2010, UConn in 2012). After their game against the Bulls, the Hoyas take on one of their fiercest rivals (Villanova in 2010, Syracuse in 2012). USF is having unprecedented success in the Big East, and could reach even greater heights with a win (4 game winning streak in 2010, 4 games over .500 in conference play in 2012). Add the fact that the crowd will be just as sparse with the 11 AM start time and all we need to do is find Dominique Jones some extra eligibility. Given our Compliance Ninjas success over the years, this might be a possibility.

Not saying this will help, just saying.

It doesn't have the Mercer double pump slam to finish things off, but I'm so happy that this is still up. That DoJo slash to the basket at the end still boggles my mind.

Bulls Recon: Casual Hoya Talks Georgetown Basketball

Marquette's Todd Mayo (4) and Georgetown's Otto Porter (22) scramble for a loose ball during second half of their NCAA college basketball game, Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, in Washington. (AP Photo/Richard Lipski)

Welcome back to another edition of Bulls Recon. Today, we have the guys at Casual Hoya helping us talk some Georgetown hoops. In this edition, we talk Otto Porter, being declared the winner of the Georgetown/Syracuse rivalry, and of course, Big East expansion.

-----------

1. The Hoyas are emerging as one of the surprises in the league after being selected 10th in the Big East preseason poll. Who has stepped up this year for GU?

Going into the season we all knew what Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark were capable of. We saw their scoring potentials in spurts last year, although they were often overshadowed by Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. The true surprise this year has been Henry Sims. Most had written Sims off as a big man bust - he averaged 3.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 fouls in 14 minutes of play last year. I have no idea what happened to him in the offseason, some say his mom yelled at him for having too much fun in college (he ran for student body vice president last year - yes this only happens at Georgetown), but he has done a complete 180. He is now the starting center, the facilitator of the offense and leads the team in assists. No one in their right mind would have ever predicted that. Nor did they predict that Henry would LOSE the election.

2. Otto Porter has adjusted nicely to Big East play. Can you give a brief breakdown of his skill set?

Otto is incredibly smooth with the ball and has a nice, albeit, recently inconsistent pull-up jumper. He has a great ability to find the ball after the shot and leads the team in rebounds. He also is a great team basketball player and moves well without the ball - perfect for the Georgetown offense. He has the potential to be the next Jeff Green. His defense needs more work, but his length creates problems when Georgetown goes into a 2-3 zone.

3. You can use this forum to make fun of Syracuse after they decided to bring out gray uniforms. Congrats on being declared the winner of the SU-Georgetown rivalry.

The uniforms are only part of the reason why Georgetown won the rivalry. We've also (1) never lost scholarships because we couldn't graduate players, (2) sent more players to the NBA court than County court, and (3) never harbored a suspected child molester. And we don't make T-shirts for waking up in the morning.

4. How do you feel about the new Big East teams? Just three more stiffs for you to beat down?

It sucks. I mean I can sit here and make up reasons why adding Houston, SMU and UCF is good for the conference from a basketball perspective but I'd be lying. I think it was the best alternative given what is happening to the college landscape, but it is far from ideal. If this is all in the pursuit of money (and no one can argue otherwise), there is plenty more to be made and I think today's movers will be tomorrow's losers. There isn't much Georgetown can do other than concentrate on its on-the-court product and root for other non-football playing schools to rebuild their programs (St. John's, Providence, Seton Hall).

5. If you haven't noticed, we've done a mixology post before each game this year. Where do you go to grab for a few drinks or a bite to eat around campus or at the Verizon Center?

Our normal answer to this question is the Hooters in Chinatown, because it is one of the worst establishments in the history of bad dining establishments. But since I am in a good mood today, I'll give you a real answer. Most Casualities frequent Iron Horse before and after games; the bar has been good to us and hosts our game watches and extravaganzas. Others check out the Irish Channel pub because it used to be an amazingly awesome dive bar attached to a Red Roof Inn (it is now a fancy Irish pub). There a ton of options around the Verizon Center and downtown DC has grown into one of the most active areas of the city. Now don't beat us and make me regret offering these nuggets of GOLD.

6. Finally, how do you see this one ending up?

Is Dominique Jones still on the team? No? Ok good, Georgetown wins. It won't be pretty and I can see the Georgetown defense holding USF to below 60 like Marquette, ND and UConn were able to do. Question is whether Georgetown upperclassmen can continue where they left off against UConn. Prediction: Georgetown 67, USF 58.

Thanks to the guys at Casual Hoya for answering my questions and make sure you head over for my answers to their questions later today.

WR Coach Phil McGeoghan Leaves USF For Miami Dolphins

Only other picture we had of Coach McGeoghan had his face covered. Angry Skip will have to do. (AP Photo/J Pat Carter)

Greg Auman had some breaking news last night as WR Coach Phil McGeoghan is leaving USF for the Miami Dolphins and will be their Assistant Receivers Coach under new coach Joe Philbin.

McGeoghan joined the staff in 2009 under Jim Leavitt and one of the four coaches retained by Skip Holtz when he took over the next season. McGeoghan has done well developing the receivers on the team, and started garnering national attention as a top notch recruiter over the past couple of seasons. Just this year, Coach McGeoghan was the primary recruiter for Chris Bivins and Sean Price, two of our highest rated signees.

I don't blame McGeoghan one bit for leaving. While I would have loved for him to stay, you can't blame a guy for advancing his career, especially when the NFL is calling. At 32, McGeoghan has a bright future in front of him, and I wish him the best of luck and hope he does well with the Dolphins.

We will keep you updated when Skip hires someone to replace Phil.
