I am going to move to Florida in a few years. I am a North Carolina resident, but Pennsylvania native. I am also a Penn State fan. I am looking for your thoughts on what the fan bases are like in Florida. Here in NC college football fans are largely apathetic due to the less than stellar history of the football programs. UNC fans can hardly wait for basketball season, NC State fans are resigned to mediocrity, but are pretty passionate. Duke doesn't have many football fans. Most Duke basketball fans are transplanted Yankees from New York or New Jersey. Wake Forest isn't even a blip on the radar. East Carolina has a small but rabid fan base.
I've only been to Florida twice. I have an uncle who lives there that tells me it seems like most college football fans in the Jacksonville area are Gator fans. What's it like in the rest of the state? Does Miami dominate South Florida or not because the U is a private school? Is Florida State equal to Florida in fans or do they have fewer because of their shorter football history. Wasn't FSU a women's college for a long time? What sort of fan base have the newer division 1-A schools built? I would imagine that South Florida and UCF have growing fan bases, but FIU and FAU are struggling. Which set of fans is going to get on my nerves first? Here in NC I really don't like the Tar Heels and Blue Devils. The Wolfpack and Pirates are fun to follow, but I don't root for or against them.
Any comments are greatly appreciated and I look forward to reading the discussion.
