These are the games that determine whether or not you go to the NCAA Tournament. Both teams are 5-4 in the Big East. The Bulls haven't lost to a team outside the Top 30 in the RPI... but they haven't beaten one either. St. John's is #51 presently, but that'll improve as the complete Big East play. USF enters today at #71 but is heading up as well. It's not a must win, but it's a very big one.
USF is on a hot streak as well having won four of their last five, including three on the road, and the only loss being a heartbreaker at #12 Louisville. They're playing their best ball of the season, and will need to show it today.
The Bulls are led by Andrea (17.4 ppg) and Andrell Smith (15.4), who are both closing in on 1000 career points for the Bulls despite being junior college transfers. Freshman Alisia Jenkins has also been coming on strong for the Bulls as the season has progressed. Coming off a 16 & 12 vs. Providence for her 5th double-double of the season, she's 2nd in the Big East in rebounding in conference games.
Shenneika Smith leads the team from Jamaica, NY. The senior averages 17.2 points per game as well as 7.2 boards. Point guard Nadirah McKenith averages 12.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, and 5.7 apg, so containing her ability to initiate offense would seem to be a key.
It's also the pink "Play4Kay" game with both teams wearing pink for breast cancer awareness. The result today will go a long way to determining which team ends up getting called on Selection Monday.
And I'm actually here! See that pic up there? I just took that!! So nice when we can actually cover a game correctly... but I digress. Feel free to contribute in the comments or on Twitter (@usfcollin). Let's get at least one team to the NCAA's this year.
