LET'S HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME, LET'S HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME, LET'S HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME, LET'S HAVE A REAL GOOD TIME...
This week, we're all going to write a post that answers one simple question: What do I want to see out of USF football this season? Here's my answer.
I want watching USF games to be fun again. Last year's team was my least favorite USF football team ever, at least after the first month of the season. It wasn't just the losing games. It was how they were being lost, through some terrible combination of on-field mistakes, poor team discipline, bad game management, and even a lousy game plan or two. The last two were the most painful for me, because I put a lot of stock into the strategy of college football. Execution is always going to be a bit flaky because you're dealing with 18- to 22-year-old kids, not highly-paid professionals. But when they're not set up to succeed by their highly-paid coaches, that drives me crazy.
They weren't even fun to watch. When I watch a college football game, there are two ways to satisfy me -- either I want to see my team win, or I want to be entertained by the game. Neither of those things happened very often when I watched USF games in October and November. It hit its nadir in the Miami game, a 6-3 snoozefest that was not only the lowest-scoring game in school history, but also the worst game to watch. You know why I never did a recap on that game and still won't write about it in any detail? Because what the hell was I going to add to that? It was wretched and it's best forgotten about.
I could sit here and write about all the specific things the Bulls need to do on the field to make me happy, or what bowl game they need to play in for me to declare the season a success. But I'm really not that high-maintenance a football fan. I just want to have fun watching them play. And also, if they could beat either FSU or Miami again, that would be great.
