USF Fans, If You're Going To Notre Dame, Do Me A Favor

SOUTH BEND IN - SEPTEMBER 04: Fans tailgate outside of Notre Dame Stadium before a game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Purdue Boilermakers at Notre Dame Stadium on September 4 2010 in South Bend Indiana. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

Like I said a few days ago, I'm not making the trip to South Bend. Toro will be there, and so will a lot of you, and I hope all of you have a fantastic time. Just do me a favor.

Make sure USF fans aren't out there acting like assholes, OK?

Playing at Notre Dame is, literally, and figuratively, like going to football church. You wouldn't go into church and start screaming at the other parishioners, climbing up on their statues, and disrespecting all their stuff. The same thing should apply here. I'm pretty sure the Notre Dame fans who can manage tickets to this game will be polite and courteous to any visiting fan, and we need to do the same thing to them.

Especially if the Bulls are fortunate enough to win the game. If that happens, I really hope USF fans are able to act like they've been there before. Because we have. Most of the program's reputation was built on big road wins. It would be a special thrill to win at Notre Dame, but it would be really weak to be in the stadium and then start taunting people and acting like a lunatic. That makes all of us look bad. And you'd like to go back again some day, right?

I don't want to preach (see what I did there?) because I know most of you don't need to hear any of this, but I wanted to at least say something. Take care of our reputation up there, please. Thanks, and have fun.

In other words, don't be a Rutgers fan

Seriously though, great post. Every team has fans that get drunk and obnoxious (some are even obnoxious without the aide of alcohol). There’s actually probably very little you can do about some of them without physically causing them to lose consciousness; but at the very least you can be a positive example of a Bulls fan. Apologize for the idiots. Thank them for being good hosts (they probably will be). Compliment them on a good game (even if it isn’t). I don’t care if you run into an obnoxious Notre Dame fan – ignore, don’t engage.

But seriously, don’t be a Rutgers fan.

BULLS are Respectable.

We generally are good people unless it’s a home game and your a student in the end zone and someone from Rutgers goes by. You’re allowed to be rude to them. It’s true. Same way you’re allowed to eat meat on Friday during Lent if it falls on St. Patty’s day. It’s just a known expection to the rule. (Figured I would go with a Cathoilc reference just for giggles).

Speaking of which, there’s a Mass after the game in the Basilica (starts 30 minutes after the conlcusion of the game, no joke).

In all seriousness, the Irish fans have been very cool so far. They’ve sent maps to campus, given recommendations where to park, what to eat, what to do and so on. They’ve even openly admitted weaknesses on their own team. I’d never do that. I’d lie right to their faces.

So… in conclusion build a positive image for your fellow Bulls and like Ramedy says… “Don’t be a Rutgers fan!” lol.

The more you know, ding, ding duuuunnnnnnhhhhhh.

Wish I could go...

However if you’re a Bulls fan in St Pete, Jannus is having a watching party. Students get in for free, then they’re having a foam party afterwards.

ND Fans

As a huge Notre Dame fan I will say that our home fans are polite. However, I apologize in advance of them shouting at you to sit down. I’ve been fighting that battle with these old bags for years. It’s not personal, they just don’t want to stand up for fear of death.

Hope everyone making the trip travels safe and good luck!

Classy Bulls

Stumbled upon your blog via The Golden Sons of Notre Dame. Solid set up here. As a life long ND fan, I’ve never been the one that talks trash (because that’s how you piss people off and make them hate you). I really like Skip Holtz and if you guys come into Rockne Stadium and win, I’ll be upset but not surprised. I was really pulling for you guys back ‘07 when you shot up to #2 in the BCS poll I think. The worst visiting fans I’ve encountered at Notre Dame Stadium are (BY FAR) Boston College fans.

For those of you coming to South Bend, safe travels and just take in as much of the atmosphere as you can. If you get the chance, go see the trumpet players in the rotunda of the dome after they play on the steps of Bond Hall. Following the performance in the dome, the band does the “Step off from the Dome” and begins their trek to the stadium. If ND loses this game, at least I know you guys will handle it with class. Good luck, Bulls. Enjoy your time in the Bend.

Be RespectaBull

Liked your article, enjoyed the posts. My brother in law traveled from Sorrysota (that’s Sarasota to outsiders) to Notre Dame (don’t have any silly nickname for them) to enjoy the win, but we here back in south had to endure the pain of the Longest Game On Record in our living room. Yes, it rained here as hard as it rained there, but we didn’t have to cancel anything because of the rain. Oh, yes we did. We were going to ride our horses and often do, despite the lightning and the rain, but we were so traumatized at the site of 80,000 plus people taking refuge from the storm, we reconsidered endangering our beloved steeds, and kept them in their stalls instead. Good thing, as the game resumed sooner than expected…..Not really.
But we are Respectabulls, and I like your posts.
