Stampeding Through The Roster: #55 LB Michael Lanaris

The other #55 on the USF roster may also be called on to step up into a bigger role this season.

#55 LB Michael Lanaris

Redshirt Junior, 6'0", 237 lbs.

Stats in 2010: While Lanaris only started one game, he played in all 13 and recorded 29 tackles, three and a half TFL, and half a sack. He also intercepted two passes.

Current Spot on Depth Chart: Lanaris is listed as the second-team middle linebacker, behind potential All-Big East candidate Sam Barrington.

How He Got To USF: Mike played high school football at Lake Mary High School and was the school's Athlete of the Year in 2007. In addition to playing football, Lanaris played catcher for the baseball team. He was named the MVP by his teammates in 2008, when he hit .465.

Recruiting Rankings: Rivals listed Lanaris as a two-star prospect, while Scout also gave him two stars and slotted him at #65 in their outside linebacker rankings.

Projected Playing Time For 2011: You'd think Lanaris might not get as much playing time with Barrington in front of him, but remember that the coaches want the linebackers to be able to play two positions. With Reshard Cliett and Mike Jeune both transitioning from safeties to outside linebackers this season, and Lanaris having some experience at that position, don't be surprised if Mike slides over to that spot some when he isn't backing up Barrington at the mike. He ran a 4.61 40 out of high school and that speed could be put to good use against tight ends, backs, or slot receivers.

The double numbering

Silly when we have available numbers.

Not as many as you think

With 105 players available, there will always be double numbers. Skip said he will keep them to a minimum in the future however.
