Stampeding Through The Roster: #95 DT Todd Chandler

After only having defensive ends and kickers so far on the countdown, we finally get to our first DT.

#95 Todd Chandler

Redshirt freshman, 6'0" 308 lbs.

Stats in 2010: None. Todd redshirted in his first year at USF while hitting the weight room and learning the defense.

Current Spot on Depth Chart: Chandler is currently listed second on the post-spring depth chart along with Luke Sager at nose tackle.

How did he come to USF: Todd signed to USF directly out of powerhouse Miami Northwestern HS. Chandler was originally a Miami commit, but changed his mind before signing day and chose the Bulls over Louisville in one of Skip Holtz's first signing-day surprises.

Recruiting Rankings: According to Scout.com, Chandler was rated as a three-star recruit and was the 37th best defensive tackle prospect in the country in 2010.

Projected Playing Time for 2011: Todd should see some action at nose tackle this year. Cory Grissom is entrenched as the starter at NT, but Chandler will have a chance to work his way into the tackle rotation this year with Terrell McClain off to the NFL and Anthony Hill moving to defensive end. Chandler will have to fight off incoming freshman Elkino Watson for reps on the two-deep, but if he has a strong fall practice, you could see Todd solidify himself all alone on the second team.

How soon most forget expectations

People are already clamoring about Elkino Watson. It wasn’t long ago when Chandler was coming out of high school that folks were heralding him as the next great player.

Todd’s got a chance to get some significant time this season. He holds the key to whether Watson red shirts or not. Personally I hope he can tie down the second spot and give Watson a season off to get bigger and learn the defense.

Funny how that works.

I’ve been writing some of the upcoming roster countdown articles. Almost everyone on the Bulls roster has the “three-star recruit” “top 100 at their position” “top 200 in Florida” “had offers from schools X Y and Z” type backstories. It didn’t used to be like that. We’re now going on Year 6 of Big East membership; I like to think this is the sort of depth that membership can get you.

Something about that fourth star, though.

It seems like the excitement (and the expectations) for a 4* recruit increase tenfold over the excitement for a 3* recruit. It’s sort of like the Richter scale.

That's sort of true

but Todd was a 4-star recruit, on scout, for much of the recruiting process. When he was a verbal to Miami he was a four star. After he defected, he became a three star player.

None taken

We assumed that Todd would play as a true freshman last year, and were surprised that Skip put the redshirt on him.

If Holtz can redshirt Watson I’ll be thrilled. I think most linemen should be redshirted unless it can’t be avoided like Anthony Hill after the rash of DT injuries in 2009.
