My personal favorite fast food chain Sonic(I could drink their cherry limeade forever) asked to come up with a standout performance, either year, specific game, or player and declare them the Hot Dog of the _______. Since we just beat our biggest conference rivals yesterday, I think its fitting we focus on who was our top performer last night, and without a doubt that has to be RB Moise Plancher.
Mo gashed the Scarlet Knight defense last night for 135 tough yards on 21 carries and also caught 3 passes for an impressive 45 yards. Offensive Coordinator Todd Fitch did a fantastic job putting Mo in a position to succeed with various option looks and shovel passes, and he took full advantage of them. While the defense was focused on Daniels running to the outside, Plancher made them pay for their overpursuit with punishing runs up the middle, breaking linebackers tackles, and consistently making it to the 2nd and 3rd level. By the 4th quarter, you could see Rutgers' defense start to wear out by the constant barrage Plancher and the offensive line put on the defensive line. Blocks were easier to make, the pile was moving forward, and as you saw with Demetris Murray's 3rd down conversion to pretty much ice the game, all that wear and tear in the first 57 minutes paid off when it mattered.
Just as important as Mo's running ability had for offense, it opened up the passing game with Rutgers having to put eight or nine people in the box to stop the running game. Andreas Sheilds in particular had a great game when USF went in a 2 TE set. Rutgers bit on the play action fake over and over, and Shields slid out for a couple of perfect 10 yard outs, and B.J. Daniels hit him in stride for a huge gain.
Even Plancher's mistakes turned into positives for the Bulls. Plancher fumbled a couple of times in the Red Zone, but thankfully they were recovered by Evan Landi and Jacob Sims for the first FAT GUY TOUCHDOWN! in USF history. All in all a terrific game by Mo. I'm happy that he had a game like that on national television after all the injuries and setbacks he has had at USF.
But we want to hear from you guys as well. Who do you think was the Hot Dog of the Game yesterday?
