Around SBN: Two Minutes Of Thunder Basketball Wins The Game

Note: Outrunner33 put this on his Facebook page, and I asked him to share it here. He's 100% right. Our students got dusted by UCF tonight, and it was embarassing. /Toro

Dear USF Students:

After tonight, you all have lost your privilege to talk trash and brag. Shame on you. The only thing more embarrassing than losing to UCF twice in one night, is the amount of support our teams received.

UCF is about 100 miles from the USF campus. That's about an hour and 45 minutes driving (depending on traffic).

Our men's soccer team was playing in the first-round of the NCAA tournament, and our men's basketball team was also playing. Did I mention the fact that we were playing our rival UCF?

Well, I counted maybe 15 to 20 students that made that trek across I-4. It really is sad that only 15 to 20 students out of a campus of nearly 40,000 students went to support our teams. Last year, when UCF played in Tampa for both men's soccer and men's basketball, they brought around 50 students to the soccer match, and upwards of 200 students to the basketball game. In other words, we suck and just got one-upped by UCF. How is it that we can't even come close to matching those numbers?

To add to all this, I have found out that only 5,000 of the 12,501 student tickets have been claimed for this Saturday's game against conference foe Pittsburgh. This is essentially a playoff game for the Big East Championship, and we can only muster 5,000 students?

It truly is embarrassing.

And here's the comment I wrote on Outrunner's FB

Couldn’t agree more. As an alum, I was embarassed to be there. Not by our play, but by the fact our students got completely dusted by UCF. To those of you that did go, thank you. To everyone else, including the Beef Studs and Student Bulls Club… finals haven’t started, and Thanksgiving is next week. No excuses, that was a joke.

And one point where I disagree...

UCF is still not a rival. It had nothing to do with the opponent. If men’s soccer and basketball were playing on the same night within driving distance at UF, Stetson, FGCU, or anywhere else, our students should have been there.

Really?

I love USF. I was raised in Tampa before the Football team existed. I want all the best for the school. My question is. When at any point in this schools history has the student body traveled?
USF is a football school despite the relative youth of the program.
USF basketball has been around since 1971.
USF is still in a building period.

The current economy isn’t exactly helping either-

Sorry, the economy excuse doesn't apply.

Car pool over there, you don’t have to pay like $20 to park, tickets are not expensive, and you might not have class the next day. (And even if you do, you get back to Tampa at what, like 10 or 10:30?

It’s not like we needed to help them sell out their arena, but being able to count the students in attendance on two hands is depressing.

And also how do you explain the student football tickets? Those don’t even cost anything.

I don't think it's the economy.

People here just don’t care for whatever reason. I have a hard time getting anyone to see a home soccer game with me, let alone one on the road.

It was 5 bucks to park

Tickets were 15 to 20. Grab a couple of McDoubles and chip in 5 bucks for gas and you are good to go.

I didn't really expect many students to go because there still isn't much interest in soccer and basketball here.

But 15-20 is pretty bad. Unfortunately I had my own work to do, otherwise I would have gone. I can’t speak for everyone though, but I’ll be at the football game.

Ah, you figured it out.

Basketball and soccer aren’t big in any way.

by blackraven on Nov 19, 2010 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

Oh I'm aware. Been at usf for longer than I care to admit.

Last year there was some buzz, but this year not so much.

I don’t particularly like basketball, but I’ll go to a home game or two generally. My brother is the basketball lover.

and soccer… well that suffers from apathy as well. Kind of sucks since it was a tourney game, though.

I'm out of the loop since they started doing the points system.

Can you just walk up and grab a ticket if you are a student, or do you have to claim one before the game?

You have to do an online request then they 'randomly' pick for the football games.

Since they don’t sell out, you’re pretty much going to get a ticket. In the event that demand beats supply, the points system comes into play.

You just print the ticket out.

Is that surprising, though?

It’s consistent with what we’ve seen on-campus. The fan turnout for basketball just isn’t there.

I think football has cannibalized other sports at USF. Basketball attendance took a dive during the McCullum era (also about the time we were joining the Big East), and hasn’t recovered, despite a quality coach, a great home schedule full of national powers, a USF all-timer in Dominique Jones, and a successful season last year.

Outrunner has been writing comments like this since I can remember on BullsPen

Honestly, we get it already. I think everyone should just worry about their own fandom. I realize it is a low number of people, but does it make me less of a fan because I live in Sarasota and did not make it?

If you live more than 3 hours from a game, I can understand not going

But it was an easy trip for a lot of Tampa students, and there should have been a lot more at the game

And I'll keep saying it......

…….till things start changing. I realize that not everyone could make it last night, but 15 students of 40k is still pathetic. I’m not trying to challenge peoples fan-hood, just trying to hammer it home and get students to care.

Honestly, I love USF basketball

But the lack of turn-out is no surprise. We stink. We have not done anything. And this year will be abysmal (blast you DoJo). Until they start making a yearly push towards the Big Dance, I can’t blame students for not wanting to drive to Orlando.

Orlando? Seriously, that place is terrible. I have to go to a wedding there tomorrow, and I am absolutely dreading it. The traffic is the worst I’ve ever been in and you need to pay a toll to go anywhere.

Not true about the fans at soccer

They’ve been outstanding this year, getting 2,000+ at some matches. And the large majority of them are students. Many with vuvuzelas, body paint, and lots of things to say to opposing goalkeepers. That Akron match sounded like The Kop at Anfield. It was awesome. We ARE a soccer school. And if you’re drawing that well at home, it’s not unreasonable to expect more than 15-20 to make the drive to Orlando for a really entertaining doubleheader. Coach Dikranian from men’s soccer even stepped up and bought Papa John’s for the students that made the trip.

Since writing this, I’ve gotten lots of feedback about a lack of leadership in the student “fan” groups. Sometimes all it takes is an organizer, and those groups should be at the forefront of making things like this happen. I’ve been that organizer on this campus before and not that long ago, and it’s not that hard. Just takes a little effort, and being willing to reach out to lots of different groups of people.

The football thing...

…is baffling. To be in contention for the Big East, against Pitt and only get 5k students? On a beautiful November Saturday? That’s inexplicable. Maybe there’ll be a big walkup? I’m not sure how the system works for students.

I’ll be there, pulling for the Bulls and hanging out with friends. I guess there’ll be plenty of space to stretch out?

Not trying to start any s***, but

didnt 1 of you get the time wrong to the USF/Rutgers game? And you run a USF blog! So we all have moments where are fandom isnt as great as it should.

When I attended USF, I went to every home basketball game I could, and yelled the whole game. Mostly for Reggie Kohn to stop shooting 48 ft jump shots, but still. I felt that was enough as a fan, to show up at home and be into the game. Even if a roadie was at St. Leo though I didnt feel obligated to attend. As a vet of commuting over there for Magic games, I can say sitting on I-4 during rush hour is downright awful.

No excuse for students not showing tomorrow though. B.E. implications, probably the biggest name team on the home schedule, beautiful Saturday afternoon. If there was 1 game this season I would want to attend, it would be this one. (and I will be)
