Dominique Jones Named to All-Big East Team

I was gearing up to make the case for Dominique Jones being on the All-Big East first team, figuring they wouldn't be announced for a few days. Instead, the Big East announced the teams this morning and DoJo made the list. He's the second USF player ever named to the All-Big East first team. The first was Kentrell Gransberry two years ago.

One of the six players on the All-Big East first team will be named conference player of the year on Tuesday. Scottie Reynolds was the only unanimous selection to the first team, so he's probably the favorite for that award.

ALL-BIG EAST FIRST TEAM
Greg Monroe, Georgetown, C, So., 6-11, 247, New Orleans, La.
Luke Harangody, Notre Dame, F, Sr., 6-8, 255, Schererville, Ind.
Dominique Jones, USF, G, Jr., 6-4, 205, Lake Wales, Fla.
Wes Johnson, Syracuse, F, Jr., 6-7, 205, Corsicana, Texas
Scottie Reynolds, Villanova, G, Sr., 6-2, 190, Herndon, Va.
Da’Sean Butler, West Virginia, F, Sr., 6-7, 225, Newark, N.J.

P.S. I think Lazar Hayward got screwed.

Who would Hayward have made it into the first team over?

He is a forward… i don’t think he has a better resume than Luke, De’Sean, or Wes.

Luke being injured and his team doing better might make him the candidate for that replacement… but Luke is the 2 time BE Player of the year… there was no way he was being left off that list.

I think the list is pretty much spot on.

Astro is compiling an All-Big East Blogger team and I damn near left Harangody off of mine. Notre Dame started playing better when he came out. But he was overwhelming enough when he was healthy that I couldn’t leave him off.

I would have replaced Johnson with Hayward. Hayward’s numbers are better and I don’t think Marquette would be where they are (20 wins, 11-7 in conference with a first-round bye and a lock for the NCAAs) without him. Johnson has thrown out a few clunkers lately, and Syracuse is an ensemble – maybe they wouldn’t be 28-3 without him, but I’m sure they’d still make the NCAA tournament.
